INDULGE YOUR INNER VOYEUR!
COME TO
THE LONELY, POST-MODERN, ARTSY-FARTSY PEEP SHOW
AT THE TRIBECA CINEMAS
The red carpet in front of the Tribeca Cinemas will lead you
to a party that seems normal enough at first—food, drinks,
a DJ and four video monitors. Walk in further to find two
whimsical, inflated stages, each one surrounded by booths.
When cued, enter your own private booth and plug in your headphones
to see a short performance by a solo artist. You’ll
feel like you’re watching TV (in a good way!) Fourteen
solo pieces are performed continuously throughout the party,
ranging from choreographers to singers to former Cirque du
Soleil performers. You choose which pieces to see, and in
which order.
Come prepared for a new experience…

artists include the renowned comic choreographer David
Parker of The Bang Group; spellbinding performer
with unusual themes Karen Bernard; gorgeous
former Cirque du Soleil acrobat/contortionist Anna
Venizelos; hilarious former Cirque du Soleil clown
Ambrose Martos; provocative solo performer/playwright
Victoria Libertore; heavenly singer/composer
Susan Oetgen; Muffin Character Handshake
from Conni's Avant Garde Restaurant Rachel Murdy;
wacky and bold performance artist Cheryl Harnest;
talented actress/singer/Japanese anime voice Eileen
Stevens; four fantastic choreographers who have worked
with Dixie Fun Dance Theatre for many years—Alberto
Denis, Kelly Hayes, Carrie Malernee, Katy Orthwein;
and the director of Dixie Fun Dance Theatre, Dixie
FunLee Shulman.
This non-typical 1-to-1 performance experience is similar
to a peep show (although probably nobody will be naked). Each
spectator watches alone and may feel more freedom to react
and respond genuinely to what they are experiencing. While
removed from the audience through plastic and headphones,
each soloist is actually only a few feet away from the dozen
spectators--about the same distance between your most comfortable
chair and your TV. The intention is to make live performance
feel as close as possible to watching television. The overall
theme is isolation and loneliness within our global, high-tech,
fast-paced, constantly connected and homogenous culture. While
this sounds like a heavy topic, most solos contain humor.
The Lonely, Post-Modern, Artsy-Fartsy, Peep Show is
supported by Manhattan Community Arts Fund/New York City Department
of Cultural Affairs, administered by the Lower Manhattan Cultural
Council, and the Puffin Foundation. The…Peep Show
was also recommended to receive Swing Space through the
LMCC. While space was not found, Dixie Fun Dance Theatre acknowledges
being accepted twice for such a competitive program.
About Dixie Fun Dance Theatre
Dixie Fun Dance Theatre create dances and performance events
that are reminiscent of pop art, political cartoons and expressionist
painting all combined and expressed physically. The choreography
typically combines outrageousness and humor with serious subject
matters. The result is provocative theatre that is entertaining
while promoting social and political change. Shulman’s
choreographic process begins in the library. Movement is never
for movement’s sake only, instead, all of the choreography
directly reflects the specific ideas and imagery generated
by the research.
Dixie FunLee Shulman created Dixie Fun Dance Theatre in 2000
in New York City. The company has performed at home in many
venues including Dance New Amsterdam, Dance Theater Workshop,
PS122, Joe's Pub, Symphony Space, Joyce SoHo, Dancenow/NYC
Festival, La MaMa, HERE Arts Center, Dixon Place, BAX, WAX,
BAAD! and BRIC. Shulman has performed The Thinnest Woman
Wins at Teatro dell'Elfo in Milan, Teatro Annibal Caro
in Civitanova Marche, Italy, at the Gilded Balloon in the
Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Studio 303 in Montreal, Philadelphia
Fringe Festival (now Live Arts Festival), Minnesota Fringe
Festival, Boulder International Fringe Festival, and Atlanta's
First Glance Festival. Dixie Fun Dance Theatre has received
funding from the Manhattan Community Arts Fund/New York City
Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by the Lower
Manhattan Cultural Council, as well as the Puffin Foundation,
